Help with pattern

Postby mindfulmom2 » Thu Aug 22, 2013 5:33 am

Hi,

I purchased Annabella's pattern (version 1) yesterday and I am stuck on Row 4 of the skirt - looking ahead I foresee the same issue with Row 6, 11. I have tried the row several times but come up short (23 V-stitch vs 32). I get the feeling there must be something I keep interpreting incorrectly but cannot figure out where I am making the error. Can someone help me?
Thank you!

I am wondering if maybe you missed the increases in Row 2. Before you do Row 4, how many V-sts do you have? It looks like in Row 1 you should have 23, but then in Row 2 you should have 28. So in Row 4, you should be starting out with at least 28. Let me know after you look at your work, and tell me how many V-sts you have before starting that row.

Thank you for your reply. I do have 28 V-st to begin Row 4 but only have 23 at the end of the row, and thus not completing the row - I hope that makes sense. I think I am misreading something, I hope the attachment illustrates how I am interpreting the row.
Thank you for helping me figure this out.

The V-st-inc would actually count as 2 v-sts in the end count. I am getting 36 as the count, but that doesn't seem right either.

V-st in next sc= 1
V-st-inc in next V-st= 2
V-st in next sc = 1
*{sc in next V-st, V-st in next sc}7times =7
V-st-inc in next= 2
V-st in next= 1
Rep from * 2 times= (7+2+1)X2=20
V-st in next 2 times= 2

36?

I am not sure what is happening, but I think you are right, that it is a minsterpretation of the instructions. Tralee, I think what you have is right. but on a different line number, maybe.

Here are the original instructions:
Row 4: Ch 1, sc in first V-st, V-st in next sc, V-st-inc in next V-st, V-st in next sc, *[sc in next V-st, V-st in next sc] 7 times, V-st-inc in next V-st, V-st in next sc, rep from * 2 times, [sc in next V-st, V-st in next sc] 2 times, turn––32 V-sts, 32 sc.

Here are the same instructions, just broken down by step. Try following these using the steps below and let me know what happens? Note: at the end of each step I have how many you made this step plus how many total up to that step's point.
Step 1: Sc in first V-st, V-st in next sc, V-st-inc in next V-st, V-st in next sc (you should have 3 V-sts made total)
Step 2: [sc in next V-st, V-st in next sc] 7 times (7 V- sts made this step for 10 V-sts made total)
Step 3: V-st-inc in next V-st, V-st in next sc (2 V-st made this step for 12 v-sts made total)
Step 4: Rep Step 2 (7 V-sts made for 19 total)
Step 5: Rep Step 3 (2 V-st made for 21 total)
Step 6: Rep Step 2 (7 V-sts made for 28 total)
Step 7: Rep Step 3 (2 V-st made for 30 total)
Step 8: [sc in next V-st, V-st in next sc] 2 times (2 V-sts made for 32 total).

Unless I am incorrect about the V-St-inc counting as 2 V-Sts in the end count,Step 1 should be 4, and I believe that step 3 would add 3 instead of 2. Which would also change step 5 and 7.

The V-st-inc counts as 1 V st because it results in1 increase. What is happening is you are making a V-st (and 2 sc) in a st that would normally just have 1 sc. So it actually yields 1 sc and 1 V-st that normally would not have been there (normally it would count just as 1 sc, but now it counts as 2 sc and 1 V-st). Let me know if this makes sense?

Haha, Lisa, that's what I get for not checking the pattern and the stitch definitions. Sorry about that. I see where mindfulmom2"s count came out different though. Rep from * 2 times means that that portion will actually be worked 3 times ( once through, then 2 repeats) giving you 27 instead of 18.

Thank you so much for all your help! I finally saw I was skipping a repetition. I will blame my absent-mindedness on the heat that had returned here - dryer weather is back and the skirt is halfway done.
Thanks again!
