Curling Circles, Funny Shaped Squares and More

Postby anjgoldman » Tue Jan 06, 2009 12:20 pm

Hi. I'm an intrepid and probably foolish new crocheter who fell in love with this pattern and just had to try it. Unfortunately, I've encountered some problems (that a more experienced crafter would not have had.)

1. My circles are curling. What am I doing wrong?

2. When transitioning to the square shape, the sides of the square that should be straight tend to look concave. What am I doing wrong?

3. I'd like to make this in a heavier weight yarn. What kind of adjustments do I need to make? I tried using the instructions as written, but the initial circle is too large.

I have practiced the pattern in a smooth, light colored yarn and my pieces seem to be coming out all right except for the problems mentioned above. Any advice would be much appreciated!

Hello Angela!

Let me ask a few questions.. First, what does your circle measure? And also, what yarn are you using?

I would first make sure your circle measures 3 1/2 inches across. If it doesn't, experiment with hook sizes until it is the correct size. If it is, it should be fairly flat. If not and your circle is about 3 1/2 inches across, can you post a photo here so I can see what it looks like?

As for the square, the first rnd of the square will definitely be concave. You will see on that rnd and the next, you continue with dc and hdc sts to gradually even it out. Let me know what happens when you get into further rnds. By the last rnd, it should be fairly square in shape. And then when you go to connect, that will really square them off.

Thanks, Lisa. Last night's square came out WAY better than previous ones. :D

I'll be trying to make the first "official" square with worsted wt. yarn next. Any suggestions on how to adjust the increases or shaping? Or can I at least come back if I get funky results?

I would just go as written, and by all means come back.. and take photos too if you are able! I am sure we can easily figure out how to get it to work in worsted weight if it does not work for you! :)
