Cable appearance

I suppose this is more of a general question than a real cry for help. I'm on my second mitten pattern of the set, now (I made Woodridge, and am now working on Stonehedge), and I really like the pattern. It's been easy to follow and it works up beautifully. One thing I have noticed, however, is that my cables do not seem to come out as sharply defined as those in the pictures. Mine sort of blend in with the mitten, and are kind of hard to see, even though I'm using the exact same yarn colors. Does anyone happen to know if this is just the way the mittens work, or is there something I am/am not doing that would affect the way the cables look? Perhaps I am making my stitches too tight? Thanks in advance for any feedback anyone can give.

I would guess that your stitches are too tight. That happens to me when I work cables also. I have to make them way looser than i would normaly crochet. Try to loosen them up a bit and see how that looks. Be sure to post pictures for us all to see!!

I think it may also depend on what yarn you are using, and the color. What yarn and color are you using for yours? Do you by any chance have a photo?

Thanks so much for the reply. Right now I'm working on the Stonehedge pattern using Red Heart's Aran Fleck yarn. I'll post a picture when I'm a little further into the pattern so that I can get a good shot of the cables - hopefully in the next day or two. Thanks again!

Okay, this took a little longer than I anticipated, but here are some in-progress pictures. The first one (mitten two) is of the palm of the mitten, for comparison, and the second one (mitten one) shows the design on the top. I'm currently working off the x-large instructions for the Stonehedge pattern, which is being made in Aran Fleck yarn by Red Heart. Again, I'm not displeased with the way they're turning out - I just feel like my cables look a little off. And if that's really the way they're supposed to look, then I guess it's just me!
Thanks so much for all your help.

It looks liek you have them right on Dear. The yarn is playing a factor in your not seeing your cables a whole lot. Simply because of the "fleck" in there. the back looks like it should as well. Very nice start!

Just my own mind misinterpreting things, then! Thank you so much for taking a look - I feel a lot better about it, and I'm enjoying working through the pattern. The instructions are great. Thank you so much for your feedback!

Just as an addition (and hopefully this is the right place to post this) there is an error in the current version of the pattern. On page 15, under the instructions for the Lower Hand Left of the Stonehedge pattern, Round Four refers to working hdc and stitching in a popcorn stitch, which doesn't exist in the Stonehedge pattern. The corresponding instructions for the Lower Hand Right seem to be correct.
