  • Tape measure

Abbreviations

  • ch = chain
  • sp = space
  • sk = skip
  • rep = repeat
  • rnd = round
  • sc = single crochet
  • sl st = slip stitch
  • MC = Main Color
  • CC = Contrasting Color
  • mm = millimeter
  • " = inch
  • yo = yarn over
  • dbl-small-loop = double small loop
  • trp-small-loop = triple small loop
  • sc-combo = single crochet combo
  • st = stitch

Stitches

  • Sc: insert hook into st indicated and pull up a loop, yo and draw through 2 loops on hook
  • Dc: Yo, insert hook into st indicated, (yo and draw through 2 loops on hook) twice
  • Beg-loop: sl st in sp indicated, (ch 1, sc, ch 3, sc) in same sp; always counts as first loop.
  • Loop: (sc, ch 3, sc) in st indicated
  • Dbl-loop: (sc, ch 3, sc, ch 3, sc) in st indicated
  • Trp-loop: (sc, ch 3, sc, ch 3, sc, ch 3, sc) in st indicated
  • Sc-combo: (insert hook from front to back of next loop (hole of loop), SKIP THE NEXT 2 LOOPS, then back to front of next loop (hole of loop), yo, and draw through both loop holes, yo and draw through 2 loops on hook)

Gauge

  • Ch 26 (or 26 + multiples of 3 for larger swatch)
    Rnd 1:
Sc in 5th ch from hook, sk 2 ch, (sc, ch 3, sc) in next ch (loop completed), *sk 2 ch, loop in next ch. Rep from * across. || 8 loops ||
Rnd 2-10: Turn; sl st in 1st loop, ch 1, loop in same loop and in each loop across. || 8 small-loops ||
  • Stitch Gauge: 4 loops = 2 inches
    Row Gauge: 4 rows = 1 inch
Note: It is better to obtain stitch gauge than row gauge since lengths are achieved with tape measure.

Do NOT turn throughout pattern unless instructed to do so.

Rnd 1: With MC and size F hook or sizes needed to obtain gauge, ch 3, sl st into first ch to make ring. Ch 1, 10 sc in center of ring. join with sl st to first sc. Mark this as right side. [10 sc]

Rnd 2: Ch 1, 2 sc in same sc and each sc around; join with sl st to first sc. [20 sc]

Rnd 3: (Sl st in first st, ch 1, sc, ch 3, sc) in same st (beg-loop completed; Note: Counts as first loop, now and throughout), sk next sc, (sc, ch 3, sc) in next sc (loop completed), sk next sc, *loop in next sc, sk next sc. Rep from * around; join with sl st to first sc first loop. [10 loops].

Rnd 4: Beg-loop in first loop, (sc, ch 3, sc, ch 3, sc) in next loop (dbl-loop completed; Note: Each dbl-loop counts as 2 loops, now and throughout) *loop in next loop, dbl-loop in next loop. Rep from * around; join with sl st to first sc of first loop. [15 loops].

Rnd 5: Beg-loop in first loop, loop in each loop around; join with sl st to first sc of beg-loop. 15 loops.

Rnd 6: Beg-loop in first loop, *dbl-loop in next loop, loop in next loop, rep from * 6 more times, dbl-loop in last 2 loops; join with sl st to first sc of first loop. [23 loops].

Rnd 7: Beg-loop in first loop, loop in next loop, *dbl-loop in next loop, loop in next 2 loops. Rep from * around; join with sl st to first sc of first loop. [30 loops].

Rnd 8: Beg-loop in first loop and in each loop around. Join with sl st to first sc of beg-loop.

Cont rep Rnd 8 until hat measures 4" from center ring (Note: The center ring was formed by Rnd 1). Continue on to "Brim Side"

BRIM SIDE:

Rnd: 1 Rep Rnd 8. Mark this row for Brim placement.

Rnd 2-3: Rep Rnd 8.

Rnd 4: Sl st in first loop, ch 1, (sc, ch 3, sc, ch 3, sc, ch 3, sc) in same loop (trp-loop completed; Note: Each trp-loop counts as 3 loops), trp-loop in each loop around; join with sl st to first sc of beg-loop. [90 loops].

Rnd 5 (See fig below for aid): Ch 1, *(insert hook from front to back of next loop, sk next loop, insert hook from back to front of next loop, yo and draw through two loop holes, yo and draw through two loops on hook) (sc-combo completed; resulting in a "puff"). ch 3, sc-combo using first and last loop of next trp-loop and in each trp-loop around in same manner that first sc-combo was created in. rep from * around; join with sl st to sc of first sc-combo. Do NOT fasten off.[30 ch-3 sp, 30 "puffs" made].

RUFFLE BRIM:

Note: The last rnd of Brim Side (Rnd 5) will be referred to as "working rnd."
Rnd 1 (See Fig below for aid): Sl st in next ch-3 sp, ch 1, sc in same sp, ch 5, sc in loop below next puff in Rnd 1 of Brim (Note: This row marked for Trim placement), sk next loop in Rnd 1 of Brim, sc in next loop in Rnd 1 of Brim, ch 5, working back in working rnd, sk next 2 ch-3 sps after last sc made in working rnd (Note: This last sc would have been the first st made in this rnd), sc in next ch-3 sp in working rnd, sk next ch-3 sp in working rnd, *sc in next ch-3 sp in working rnd, ch 5, sc in loop below next puff in Rnd 1 of Brim (Note: This row marked for Trim placement), sk next loop in Rnd 1 of Brim, sc in next loop in Rnd 1 of Brim, ch 5, working back in working rnd, sk next 2 ch-3 sps after last sc made in working rnd (Note: This last sc would have been the first st made in this rnd), sc in next ch-3 sp in working rnd, sk next ch-3 sp in working rnd, rep from * around; join with sl st to first sc. 24 ch-5 sps, 24 sc

Rnd 2 (See FIG below): ch 1, loop in same sc, loop in next ch, sk next ch, loop in next ch, sk next ch, loop in next ch, *sk next sc, loop in next ch, (sk next ch, loop in next ch) twice. rep from * around. Join with sl st to sc of first loop. 72 loops.

Rnd 3-5: Beg-loop in first loop, loop in next loop and in each loop around. Fasten off; continue on to "TRIM." 72 loops.

TRIM:

Rnd 1: With size 10 hook and size 30 thread, with right side facing BEND RND 5 (of brim) TOWARD YOU TO EXPOSE LOOPS OF ROW 4. Attach thread to any loop, ch 1, sc in same loop, 11 dc in next loop, *sc in next loop, 11 dc in next loop. Rep from * around. Join with sl st to first sc.

Rnd 2: Ch 3, 11 dc in same st, sc in next loop of Rnd 3 of Brim Ruffle (this is loop below 11 dc group worked on previous rnd), *12 dc in next sc from Rnd 1 of Trim, sc in next loop of Rnd 3 of Brim Ruffle. Rep from * around. Join with sl st to top of ch-3. Fasten off.

Hold hat upright with right side facing you. There are 6 "dips" in the brim. Each dip there is an open seam. Sew seams, or close each seam with a ribbon as shown in photo.
